Kanga
Ein Kanga ist ein rechteckiges Stück Stoff aus reiner Baumwolle in den Maßen 1,5 x 1 Meter. Seine individuell gestalteten, auffälligen Muster sind in verschiedensten leuchtender Farben erhältlich. Der große Bereich in der Mitte eines Kangas weist ein zentrales Motiv auf, das von einem breiten Rahmen umgeben ist. Der Text auf einem Kanga – verfasst in Kiswahili – ist in der Regel ein lokales Sprichwort, eine Redewendung oder ein Slogan, der in einem Rechteck an einer der Längsseiten des zentralen Bereichs platziert ist.
Im Prinzip ist ein Kanga ein Kleidungsstück für Frauen, das als Wickeltuch, Rock, Schürze, Schal, Kopfbedeckung, Halstuch oder islamisches Bedeckungsgewand getragen wird. Es hat auch noch viele andere Verwendungszwecke, die sich ständig ändern, und die Botschaft ist besonders wichtig. A kanga is a 1.5 x 1 metre rectangular piece of pure cotton cloth. Its individually designed, bold patterns come in a variety of vibrant colours. The large area in the middle of a kanga features a central motif, surrounded by a wide frame. The text on a kanga – written in Kiswahili – is usually a local proverb, saying, or slogan, set inside a rectangle on one of the longer sides of the central area.
Principally, a kanga is a woman’s garment, worn as a wraparound, skirt, apron, shawl, headdress, scarf or Islamic modesty garment. It also has many other uses, which are ever-changing, and the message is particulary important.
