Our stand at the 25th anniversary edition of the Long Night of the Sciences included something for all ages. Here’s a taste of what we presented at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on 28 June 2025.
A map of the Belt and Road Initiative’s land and sea routes, designed by Iaroslav Boretskii (ZOiS), helped visitors visualise the breath-taking scale of China’s infrastructure project. On the map, symbols represented each project. Visitors could take home stickers of these symbols to remind them of the evening and our work. Accompanying the map, a compact booklet provided an in-depth insight into the individual projects.
For more personal interactions, a few of our researchers joined us to present and answer questions on their work. Linda Ammann, Daniel Kossmann and Kadara Swaleh gave short talks. Tanya Talwar and Johanna Függer-Vagts presented films which have been restored under the title “Transregional South Asia on Film: German ‘Kulturfilme’ 1933–1934”. John Njenga Karugia screened his film “New Silk Roads in Local and Global Politics”.
Our Sound Quiz presented facts from each of our projects in a local language. Visitors were invited to guess the correct translation of each fact, with correct answers rewarded with a short video about that particular research project. A blindfolded game of ‘guess the BRI country’ invited people to decide which country was inside a box through touch alone. Participants were also treated to a short introduction to types of infrastructure from Prof. Claudia Derichs. The brief yet informative video explained the main forms infrastructure can take.
